John Raitt, singer father of Bonnie, dies

Sunday, February 20, 2005

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- John Raitt, the robust baritone who created the role of Billy Bigelow in the original New York production of "Carousel" and sang with Doris Day in the movie "Pajama Game," died Sunday. He was 88.

Raitt, the father of singer Bonnie Raitt, died from complications of pneumonia at his Pacific Palisades home, his manager, James Fitzgerald, said in a statement.

Raitt had become well known on the West Coast for his handsome presence and ringing voice when in 1944 he was invited to New York to try out for the role of Curly in the road company of "Oklahoma!" He was rushed from Penn Station to the St. James Theater and an audition with Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers.

In 1995, Raitt recalled: "I hadn't sung since California, so I said, 'Do you mind if I warm up?' I sang Figaro's aria from 'The Barber of Seville.' Then I sang all of Curly's songs."'

There was silence when he finished. The problem was not his voice, which was both melodic and powerful, but his height. At 6 feet 2 was he too tall for Curly? Hammerstein reasoned: "I'm a tall man. Why can't Curly be tall?" Raitt was hired for the Chicago company of "Oklahoma!"
''Don't Mess with Texas Music Vol.II''

This week features "Don't Mess With Texas Music, Vol. II" from the Texas Music Project and ArtAttack Promotions.
"Don't Mess With Texas Vol. II" features songs by 19 musicians and singers with roots or ties to the Texas music scene, which has assumed national prominence in recent years for its variety and range of musical genres and talents.
All proceeds from the sale of this CD go to support the Texas Music Project and music education in Texas schools, so one can feel especially good about buying this rare collection of musical greats.
From the opening cut "Don't Let It Get You Down" by the legendary pop-jazz pioneers The Crusaders, to Pat Green, Los Lonely Boys, the Vaughn Brothers, Steve Earle, and Beyoncé to lesser-known singer-songwriters Trish Murphy, Terri Hendrix, and Lauren Gifford, this CD is a must-have for fans of Texas music.
Thrown in for good measure are old (slow) hands such as Joe Ely, Eric Johnson, "The Joker" Steve Miller of Dallas and even the adopted Eric Clapton performing Robert Johnson's "If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day."
Texas soul isn't overlooked as Bobby "Blue" Bland, whose most famous music was produced out of Houston with Duke Records, and "The Empress Of Gulf Coast Soul" Barbara Lynn are each featured with "My Sunday's Comin' Soon" and "You're The Man," respectively.
Fleshing out the disc are two Texas country music Goliath's Clint Black and George Strait, female guitar slinger and whiskey and smoke vocalist Bonnie Raitt, and the Austin-based, catchy, Latin-spiced hard rock of Vallejo, three brothers from El Campo, Texas.
There's not a bad song in the bunch, and it makes for excellent variety background music at home.
